Halloween: The Game NPC Rescue & Escape Guide

Opening an exit and saving a resident are separate tasks. Follow the rescue loop, check the exit, and avoid leaving your followers behind.

Escape planning after 1.1.0

Patch 1.1.0 reduces cellar and gate capacity, changes item distribution and makes cellar blockers take more work. An exit that worked for an earlier group may no longer have room for yours. Confirm it is usable before leading followers there; precise new capacities are not published in the notes.

The update also lets players who return as police interact with Residents. Police vehicles push obstacles aside while entering the map, until reaching their destination. Neither change guarantees a rescue or defines personal challenge credit.

The rescue loop

As a Civilian, you need to survive while helping Haddonfield’s residents. The official multiplayer overview describes locating residents, warning them, directing their response and preparing randomized escapes.

Use the checklist below to plan a rescue. We have not tested it at every exit:

  1. Locate a resident and a possible exit. Check the route and Michael’s last known position before gathering followers.
  2. Warn the resident. After a successful conversation, choose the available command: call police, hide or follow. Confirm their response before moving on.
  3. Prepare the exit. Read the required items and activation prompts. A found key does not mean the exit is ready.
  4. Bring residents to a usable exit. Check whether an escape command is available and whether the resident actually moves through.
  5. Confirm the result before leaving yourself. Check for a rescue confirmation or a change in the resident’s status. Do not count opening the exit as a completed rescue.

Starting an escape makes noise and can expose the group. Prepare the route and tell teammates before activating it. For broader systems, see the NPC overview.

When a resident will not follow or escape

Players report different outcomes in No-one wants to rescue civilians and How do you rescue the survivors?. The following checks help narrow down possible causes; they are not guaranteed fixes.

Symptom Check next What remains uncertain
Resident does not follow Did the conversation succeed, and which command did you select? A failed command and an AI pathing issue can look similar
Resident disappeared after hiding Return to the hiding place you saw them use This guide has not verified a universal tracking marker
Resident stops at an exit Is the route active, is the entrance usable, and is the escape command available? Players report capacity and pathing problems; exact capacities are unverified
Player escaped but residents did not Check whether they completed their own escape before you left Your personal escape does not prove their rescue
Wrong vehicle key Compare the item name with the vehicle prompt Keys and vehicles can change location between matches

Some players report successful cellar rescues; another reports the police wagon was the only reliable exit in their matches. Those reports do not establish that only one exit works. If a resident stays stuck, record the exit type, platform, build and visible state before treating it as a confirmed bug.

Recognizing exit and item requirements

Community posts discuss cellars, gates, police wagons and drivable police cars. Do not treat a transport wagon and a car requiring keys as the same interaction. The police-car discussion includes players who found keys but could not identify the matching car.

In Civilian Gameplay at 39:18, NickNasty also reads “Wrong key for vehicle.” His next remark about escaping does not identify the successful route in the transcript. We therefore do not use it as proof of a complete police-car escape.

Use the items and keys reference to identify what to inspect. Exact exit capacity, every required item and all valid NPC escape types still need same-build verification.

Police calls and character choice

Phones and warned residents help build the police response. Check whether the phone itself or its line is disabled before searching for a repair item. The official progression overview associates Personality with convincing residents and alerting authorities; Civilian traits can also affect the task.

At 1:11:35, the gameplay presenter is surprised that two characters use the same phone. This is not proof of unlimited calls, a shared cooldown rule or the exact threshold for a wagon or Loomis. The video includes pre-patch footage and partly AI-filled lobbies.

Death, personal escape and XP

Patch 1.0.2 reports fixing missing XP when a spectator leaves. Read the exit and XP guide for the distinction between spectator departure, active quitting and connection loss. Staying can offer further support or return opportunities; returning as police or Loomis is not guaranteed.

Rescue tracking after launch

Patch 1.0.2 addressed some escort-to-escape counters and followers closing and locking doors on the player. If a rescue still fails, record the exit, command, NPC and counter. Current status is on the known-issues page.

Rescue credit, score and challenge progress

Opening an exit, escorting a Resident, saving that Resident and escaping yourself are different events. A successful team outcome does not tell you which player received personal XP or which challenge advanced.

1.0.3 increases the scoring value of saving and killing ordinary Residents and lowers the value of killing Special Targets. It does not publish a full personal-XP attribution formula. In a September 26 discussion, players disagree about how commands and final interactions assign rescue credit. Neither account has been independently established here.

For a challenge, check its exact wording and your counter. Some require escorting followers; others require residents saved plus your own escape in the same match. Compare the selected challenge targets. For a disputed rescue, record who opened the exit, who spoke to or escorted the NPC, who issued the final command, and each player’s result and counter. We have not verified a universal last-command rule or the complete requirements of the three-Residents-in-a-car achievement.
